Principle and Structure

The primary goal of a speaker stand is to enhance the full potential of a speaker without altering its inherent characteristics. To achieve this, the speaker stand should not add its own resonance or character, nor should it overly dampen the speaker’s natural vibrations. Many speaker stands on the market stray from this purpose by either introducing unwanted characteristics or by excessively absorbing vibrations, both of which hinder the speaker’s performance.

In contrast, our RSS series speaker stands have maintained a long-standing presence for over 10 years, a testament to their ability to preserve the true essence of the speakers while enabling them to perform at their best. The RSS series is likely the only speaker stand that does not introduce any additional characteristics, allowing the speaker’s natural performance to shine through.

The key feature of the RSS series is its directional approach to vibration management. Rather than forcibly suppressing vibrations, it allows for quick dissipation of energy. The RSS stands feature a layered construction: the top plate is made from A2017S aerospace-grade aluminum alloy bonded with brass, the pillars are constructed from steel filled with a mixture of Teflon and polypropylene, and the base plate is aluminum alloy equipped with stainless steel spikes. This gradual increase in material hardness directs the speaker’s vibrations downward, preventing reverse vibrations that would otherwise muddy the sound.

Moreover, materials like A2017S aluminum alloy, brass, and steel are known for their naturally pleasant, clear resonance. The combination of these different metals effectively eliminates unwanted resonance while retaining the beautiful and natural tonal qualities, which is one of the unique strengths of the RSS series.

The RSS series, known for its superior vibration control and acoustic properties, has now undergone its final evolution. The steel pillars have been redesigned into an elliptical shape to avoid resonance points, and the internal filling material has been upgraded to a premium lithium tourmaline powder. The stainless steel spikes have been replaced with large brass feet, and special damping material has been added at the base to convert vibrational energy into heat energy for dissipation. This comprehensive update has further refined vibration management and eliminated unwanted resonance, making the RSS-600 the ultimate speaker stand.

A2017S Aerospace-Grade Aluminum Alloy + Brass Top Plate

The top plate of the RSS-600 speaker stand is made of 10mm thick, high-strength A2017S aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, layered with a 3mm thick brass sheet. Both the A2017S aluminum alloy and brass, when struck individually, produce a beautiful and pleasant resonance. When combined, the different metals’ resonance modes cancel each other out, maintaining the pleasing tonal quality while completely eliminating any unwanted resonance. This results in a natural, smooth sound.

If you were to tap the top plate of the RSS-600, you would notice the absence of excessive resonance common in other stands, leaving you surprised by the short and pleasant “knock” sound it produces. Additionally, metals have a natural tendency to transfer vibrations from softer materials to harder ones. In this structure, the vibration generated by the speaker travels from the A2017S aluminum alloy to the harder brass layer beneath, preventing vibrations from returning to the speaker. This prevents the backward vibration from muddying the speaker’s sound reproduction.

Once the vibrations reach the brass layer, they are quickly transferred to the even harder steel elliptical pillars below, ensuring that vibrations are efficiently dissipated away from the speaker.

Elliptical Steel Pillars

The RSS-600 features newly designed large elliptical steel pillars. Traditional square or round pillars inherently have specific resonance points, which result in unwanted vibrations and sound coloration. However, the elliptical shape of the RSS-600 pillars minimizes resonance points, significantly reducing vibrations and distortion.

These elliptical steel pillars are harder than the A2017S aerospace-grade aluminum alloy and brass of the top plate. As a result, once vibrations travel down to the pillars, they are not reflected back to the top plate. This ensures that the top plate does not resonate or produce unwanted resonance sounds, nor does it send vibrations back to the speaker, preserving the clarity of the sound.

Some commercially available speaker stands use magnesium-based materials for the pillars, boasting high internal damping and vibration absorption. However, high internal damping does not necessarily equate to superior vibration control. When softer materials like magnesium are used for the pillars, and harder materials like aluminum or steel are used for the top plate, the vibrations from the speaker cannot transfer smoothly from the top plate to the pillars. This leads to vibration buildup in the top plate, causing excessive resonance and added distortion, or worse, causing reverse vibrations that muddy the speaker’s output.

It’s important to note that some manufacturers mistakenly interpret these resonance or distortion artifacts as increased resolution, so caution is advised when evaluating these claims.

Tourmaline & Polypropylene Special Filling Material

Inside the elliptical pillars of the RSS-600, we use a special filling material made from a mixture of tourmaline powder and polypropylene particles. Vibrations that travel from the top plate to the pillars are quickly converted into heat and dissipated by this special filling material.

When placing speakers on the RSS-600 and playing music, you can physically feel the diminishing vibrations along the pillar as you move your hand from the top to the bottom of the stand. This demonstrates the effective dissipation of vibrations through the filling material.

The polypropylene particles are elliptical and lightweight, and when combined with the tourmaline powder, the filling material remains sonically neutral without imparting any unwanted tonal coloration. You can easily observe this difference by shaking a box filled with different materials like sand, gravel, lead pellets, or cast iron powder—all of which produce heavy, unpleasant sounds—compared to the smooth, pleasant sound of the tourmaline and polypropylene filling. This difference in sound quality is transferred to the speaker’s reproduced sound.

The RSS-600 is packed with this superior filling material to eliminate the standing waves and resonant sounds that typically occur inside hollow speaker stand pillars.

At ACOUSTIC REVIVE, we fully pack the pillars with the filling material, which is why the RSS-600 is shipped pre-assembled. (Unlike many other speaker stands that require the user to assemble them, often resulting in additional assembly fees if done by a retailer.) Some commercially available speaker stands claim to “control resonance” by not fully packing the pillars with filling material. However, this approach merely adds unnecessary resonance and coloration to the sound, straying far from the true purpose of a speaker stand, which is to preserve the speaker’s natural sound and maximize its performance.

Such practices may reflect the designer’s personal bias, but it is more likely that the poor tonal qualities of the filling materials they use play a significant role.

Craft a One-of-a-Kind Stand Just for You

At ACOUSTIC REVIVE, we offer custom-made stands tailored to the unique shape and size of your speakers, in addition to our standard models. We can modify not only the shape of the top plate but also the base plate and the pillars to fit your exact requirements. If you have a specific design in mind, feel free to consult with us.

We also offer the option to create distributed stands for large speakers, where a single speaker is supported by four individual stands. This ensures the perfect balance and stability for even the most demanding setups.
